One of the other threats to computers on the internet is from outside users taking control of your computer. Frequently, this is through a Trojan program. These Trojans are often sent as attachments or as part of files that have been downloaded. Sometimes, crackers connect to your computer while it is connected to the internet through an unprotected "internet port." (TCP/IP) While the best defense against Trojans and file attachments is good, updated virus software, the best defense against having your computer cracked into is to have a good firewall. While Windows XP has a built-in firewall, unless you have it turned on, it won't help. A good firewall is like a security guard at a prison, no one goes in or out without the permission of the firewall. The best firewalls make your computer invisible to the internet.
Pop-ups are another problem. While most pop-ups are harmless but annoying, some have links to web sites that are not harmless. Many pop-ups try to tell you that there is a problem with your computer or your security programs on your computer. These pop-ups are simply trying to sell you something. Some anti-virus programs and now some web browsers have pop-up blockers built in to them.
Browser Hijacking is a problem where a cracker takes control of your computer's web browser and changes your settings. Normally, keeping your security software up to date and practicing safe computing is a good start to keeping your web browser from being hijacked. A firewall will also help.
